At the Fall Award Ceremony, students who complete their books receive a gold medal! Silver and bronze medals are awarded for partially completed work. Some schools opt to offer token rewards for bonus activity completion.
The Award Ceremony is a great incentive for the students to keep trying all summer. Surveyed teachers have reported that students find the medals a strong incentive to complete the program.
Because earning a medal is based on individual effort, not group competition, each child has the opportunity to do his/her best. This approach, rewarding effort not intelligence, is a proven self motivator, as illustrated in the TED speech by Daniel Pink.
Data shows that after the first full year of the program, including
the medal ceremony, student participation increases up to 40%
the second summer. When students believe they will be rewarded
for summer work and that it is within their control, they join the
ranks of summer learners in large numbers!
